Why I quit the Wildrose Alliance
In early April of this year the party's newly hired chief bureaucrat took over the policy development process leading up to the June 25th, 2010, AGM.
I protested his actions to the executive committee, nobody cared.
When the AGM letter came out in mid May it did not have the constitutionally required list of executive committee nominations.
I protested this to the executive committee, nobody cared.
The AGM letter also stated that "the constitution does not allow for nominations from the floor." We've done this every year, and the statement is literally true only because the issue is not raised in the constitution. This was, in other words, a statement whose effect was to mislead the members.
I protested this to the executive committee, nobody cared.
A bit later the policy summary was posted to the party's website instead of sent to the members as required by the constitution.
I protested this to the executive committee, nobody cared.
In late May it transpired that none of the constitutional requirements for member notification and access had been met.
I proposed work arounds to the executive committee, nobody cared about the violations.
On about May 20th a completely reworked constitutional motion was put on the web site marked as something to be voted on at the AGM. The constitution requires that such motions be provided to members (one third of whom have no, or limited, access to the web) sixty days in advance.
I protested this to the executive committee, nobody cared.
It turned out that the new constitution was full of errors and accompanied by interpretive notes whose effect was to mislead the reader into thinking that the changes are either temporary or minor when they are neither.
I protested this to the executive committee, nobody cared.
Throughout all this I was subject to numerous personal attacks and a vicious whisper campaign combining ignorance with malice and deception.
Since I do not wish to be associated with a party that behaves in this way, I resigned.
(Note: there's an archive of protest documents here.)
